LONDON -(Dow
Jones)- Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker told Greek finance minister
Filippos Sachinidis earlier this week that most of his counterparts in the
currency union were in favor of Greece leaving it, the German magazine Der
Spiegel reported Saturday.
"If we
were to hold a secret vote now about Greece staying in the euro zone, then
there would be an overwhelming majority against," Juncker reportedly
warned Sachinidis.
It also
reported that Juncker said Greece's next elections on June 17 were its
"last chance" to stay in the euro zone, saying that if the elections
didn't produce a government that would abide by the conditions of the country's
bail-out program "then it's over."
Spiegel also
said that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble had mooted the possibility
of Greece holding a referendum on staying in the euro zone simultaneously with
the elections.
A spokesman
for Juncker said he was unable to confirm the report. A spokesman for Schaeuble
wasn't immediately reachable.
